Hormone Treatment May Improve Mental Health

Hormones can start to drop as a person ages, resulting in issues such as decreased libido or impaired immune function. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is an effective way of maintaining healthy levels of hormones and improving overall well-being. Some new research also provides evidence of how postmenopausal women might benefit from hormone therapy.

A study published in Menopause with over 2,000 female participants was conducted over twelve years to gain further knowledge of how cognitive health is tied to estrogen, the female hormone. All of the participants had undergone menopause. Results from the study suggested that these women’s cognitive function showed improvement in response to estrogen exposure for a longer time. The positive effects on mental well-being showed much greater results with hormone therapy.

While research is ongoing, the study provides further evidence that women may experience many benefits to their mental health while undergoing hormone therapy, particularly when therapy is undertaken shortly after a woman has undergone menopause.

BHRT therapy uses naturally derived hormones that are the same as those in the human body, helping women with common menopause and hormonal problems such as being unable to sleep, hot flashes, dryness in the vagina, and weight gain.
