The History of Botox

it has achieved an iconic status where hundreds of thousands of people use it to improve their appearance or even possibly address chronic conditions like migraines. Today, we’d like to go a little deeper into its history. Don’t forget to check out our family medicine Miami services when you get a chance. Let’s move on…

In the past, before it received FDA clearance in 2002 for use in wrinkles, Botox was used solely for addressing disorders with the eye muscles back in the 1990s. Even once it was officially sanctioned for use with wrinkles, the news wasn’t embraced with entirely open arms as there was some apprehension about it which today can be dispelled with a little bit of research or simply asking a licensed doctor to share their insight.

During the first year of Botox being rolled out for cosmetic use, nearly three million shots were administered yet it took quite some time for people to become comfortable with having a toxin injected into their face. However, as celebrities and more people began to use it, it was only a matter of time before it became more widely embraced. The more Botox was around, the more dermatologists refined their injection methods, and the less it was associated with its use as a dismissive descriptor.

Here’s a fun fact about Botox: Did you know that men who receive the treatment often pay more than women? It has a lot to do with the facial muscles. Because men have typically stronger facial muscles, Botox has to do a harder job to incapacitate the muscles, requiring doctors to inject more units to smooth out those pesky fine lines and wrinkles.
