Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, is a standard method of treating the symptoms of menopause. As women age, their body produces less and less estrogen. This lowered production results in the body creating uncomfortable symptoms, and HRT is a method of replacing the lost estrogen that your body fails to produce during menopause. However, hormone replacement theory is unique to each person, and our experts at PMN Health and Wellness Center have extensive experience with HRT for menopause. Choosing us as your treatment center gives you the benefit of our staff’s experience and allows us to tailor your treatment to your needs.

How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?

As mentioned before, HRT primarily focuses on replacing the estrogen your body can no longer make. Hormone replacement therapy can happen in one of two ways:

Low-Dose Vaginal Preparations: These preparations come in either cream, ring, or tablet form and limit the amount of estrogen the body absorbs. Due to this limitation, this method treats only the vaginal or urinary symptoms of menopause.

Systemic Hormone Therapy: This type of preparation comes in a spray, cream, gel, ring, skin patch, or pill form and carries a much higher dose of estrogen. Because of the concentration, systemic therapy can be used to treat all the symptoms of menopause.

Are There Risks to HRT?

As with any treatment involving editing the body’s normal functioning, there are risks associated with hormone replacement therapy. In one of the most extensive clinical trials done with an HRT drug, it was found that people who took it suffered slightly higher chances of getting breast cancer, blood clots, cancer, or stroke. However, further studies have shown that the incidence of these problems varies depending on the following:

Age: If a woman starts HRT after 60 or after ten years of menopause, the chances of these problems are much higher.

Family History: If you have a history of blood clots, cancer, heart disease, or stroke, your doctor will determine whethe r it makes sense to go through with HRT.

Type of HRT: The risks associated with HRT vary with the type of treatment and whether the estrogen is mixed with progestin.

Who is HRT For?

At PMN Health and Wellness Center, we only look at HRT if a candidate’s benefits outweigh the risks. We look at certain factors before we decide whether a client is a good candidate for HRT. Among those factors are the following:

Early Menopause or Estrogen Deficiency: Some women undergo menopause early in life and need relief from its symptoms. In these cases, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Preventing Bone Loss or Fracturing: Osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) happens in women going through menopause. HRT can help mitigate or stop the incidence of osteoporosis in some cases.

Hot Flashes and other Symptoms: Many of the symptoms of menopause can be uncomfortable, and HRT can help clients deal with them by causing them to be less intense or stopping them entirely.
