Lip Filler Down Time: How Long Do You Have to Wait, and What Do You Need to Do?

Lip Filler Down Time: How Long Do You Have to Wait, and What Do You Need to Do?

A lip filler involves injections that add volume to your lips. The doctor will inject a solution containing hyaluronic acid (or a substance similar to it), which is a natural substance found in your body. Its role is to give your skin a fresh and plump youthful look. If you are ready to have this procedure, you need to learn more about the accompanying downtime.

First of all, you need to go into the procedure with realistic expectations. Lip fillers will plump your lips, but only as far as the shape and size of your lips allow. You will not be able to get Angelina Jolie’s lips or any other specific lip shape you wish, as they will still be your lips, only enhanced. After this clarification, let us tell you what to expect during downtime following the procedure.

Immediately after the Procedure

Your healthcare provider will massage your lips gently after the injection. This will ensure that your lips absorb the substance evenly. The doctor will also monitor you for about 15 minutes. Some people may experience a few side effects, such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Bleeding.

However, the local anesthetic won’t prevent you from driving back home. If you are not sure you can handle this, ask a friend or family member to drive to and from the center.

During the First Two Days of Downtime

Your lips will look swollen for at least 48 hours after the procedure. This is perfectly normal. In some cases, the swelling may last for more than two days. Some patients may notice a little bruising, as well. If you have any concerns, talk to your doctor.

Follow-Up Appointment after Two Weeks

By the end of the second week, your lips will have settled. The swelling goes down and the final result will become visible. Around this time, your doctor will call you for a follow-up appointment. They will check the results and may take photos to create a before/after presentation, which helps many patients appreciate the results of the procedure even more.

Things to Know During Downtime

As you heal from the procedure, you may experience pain and discomfort. There are several things to know:

1. Ask Your Doctor about Pain Medication

If you are in pain, you may take over-the-counter pain medication. However, you should avoid blood thinners, like ibuprofen or aspirin. Thus, it is probably a better idea to have your doctor prescribe you something for the pain.

2. Drink a Lot of Water

Here is a simple after-care tip for downtime: stay hydrated, as this will help your body heal faster.

2. Sleep with Your Face Elevated

During the downtime, you should use two pillows while sleeping. Keeping your face elevated helps heal the swelling faster. Also, you must remember not to sleep face down during the two weeks after lip enhancers. Click here to learn more about this procedure!
