Premature Menopause May Lead to More Severe Symptoms

POI is a condition where functions in the ovaries cease, resulting in premature menopause.

In women with POI, the researchers studied menopause symptoms and evaluated them against the intensity and frequency of related symptoms in women who had normal menopause. The study involved over 250 women.

The researchers found that a broad number of menopause symptoms, including psychological and sexual symptoms, is encountered by women with POI. Sudden mood shifts, hot flashes, insomnia, exhaustion, and sexual dysfunction, like vaginal dryness, uncomfortable intercourse, and diminished libido were included. These effects are frequently more intense than those encountered by women who experience menopause naturally.

According to the source article, to minimize any long-term adverse health effects, women with POI may wish to undergo hormone treatment at least before the normal age of menopause.
