Hormone treatment helps tackle breast tumors that react to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. For certain tumors, breast cancer cells have receptor proteins that bind to estrogen and progesterone to assist in the development of cancer cells. Treatments of hormone therapy also referred to as endocrine therapy, help prevent the hormones from binding to receptors. The procedure can also limit the body’s development of such hormones.
Hormone treatment is only used for breast tumors that are found to have estrogen or progesterone receptors, the Mayo Clinic states. These forms of cancers are referred to as estrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) or progesterone receptor-positive (PR positive) by physicians. A study of cancer cells will be analyzed by physicians who specialize in testing blood and body tissue to see if they have estrogen or progesterone receptors.
