Hormone Therapy May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s in Women

The disease typically affects women more than men and research into its causes continues.

A recent article suggests that beyond the potential ties between menopause and Alzheimer’s, the results of a study showed that replacing estrogen may help with protecting women against developing Alzheimer’s and its progress.

In animal trials, researchers discovered that estrogen replacement via antioxidant activity reversed the pathologizing of tau, the nerve cells that become damaged in AD. Results indicate early replacement of postmenopausal estrogen could aid AD protection.

It should be noted that while these findings all indicate that estrogen could be important in helping to control the risk of Alzheimer’s in women, more studies are required to decide whether the outcomes affect humans the same way.
