According to a new study, a therapy designed to reduce male testosterone as well as other hormones in patients dealing with prostate cancer may hold the key.
The prostate cancer patients that were undergoing hormone therapy showed a lower risk of developing virus infection versus those that did not receive hormone treatments. The differences were even more noticeable when these patients were evaluated against individuals that were free of any cancer type.
Although the research isn’t suggesting that everyone go and get hormone therapy immediately, the data does prove vital. Reducing testosterone may have benefits since a male hormone receptor also regulates a protein called TMPRSS2, which is shown to benefit COVID-19 infected healthy cells in other research. TMPRSS2 may also be reduced by therapies that suppress male hormones — not just in the prostate, but other body tissues as well.
